TWINKIES - AMERICA'S #1 JUNK FOOD!!!

Yeah, you read the title for this week's blog correctly and no, it's not a play on words.  You have been debating some hot topics for the past couple of weeks and I decided to give you a break from the political and social issues and let you have some fun - even though the topic is a serious one!!!

The idea for this week's blog comes from one of your fellow APUSH 2 students that had the NERVE to say that Twinkies were terrible!!!  HELLO!!! Twinkies, like them or not, are an American icon and just as American as apple pie!!!  When the company announced that they weren't going to make them anymore, riots nearly broke out across the nation and people swamped their local stores to stockpile their supplies of this national treasure!!!  Once again, AMERICANS spoke and forced the change and Twinkies are being mass produced, once again, from sea to shining sea!!!

So, that got me to thinking... and as you all know, that is a VERY dangerous thing for me to do... and I came up with this week's blog question!!!!

THIS WEEK'S BLOG TOPIC:
Should Twinkies be officially declared, by an act of Congress, America's National Junk Food??  If not Twinkies, what? (yeah, I have to give equal opportunity for those of you - and you KNOW WHO YOU ARE, MA.... that may have a different opinion!)

PS> Be on the look out for the KeyElement & Lord Gehm Twinkies public service announcement coming soon!

  1. First of all, I would like to say that I think it would be ridiculous for Congress to make Twinkies (or any other junk food) a "National Food". Doing so would have so many negative effects on our country, especially with the rise in childhood obesity and juvenile diabetes, not to mention all the serious health problems that go hand in hand with junk food later on in life. There's a reason why Americans are some of the most unhealthy people in the world, and creating a National Junk Food will only make things worse. Not to mention the message that will send out to other countries.

Second, if there HAD to be a National Junk Food, I firmly believe that Oreos are far more American than Twinkies. Oreos have been around since 1912, 18 years prior to the invention of the Twinkie. Not to mention that Oreos worldwide are viewed as a symbol of our nation.

You think the riots were bad when Twinkies were taken away? CHAOS WOULD LIKELY ENSUE if Oreos were to disappear.

    1. Which brings me to my next somewhat-off-topic rant. Why would people want to riot over something as trivial as junk food??? Honestly, there are store-brand junk foods similar to Twinkies, and it's not like they would taste disgusting. Seriously people, where is the logic?

People choose to riot for the wrong reasons. In the past few years, several species of birds, frogs, sea lions, tigers, bears, seals, rhinos, dolphins, and tortoise have gone extinct. One of the tortoise species that went extinct was Lonesome George, the last Pinta Island Tortoise, which was one of the species Darwin observed in the Galapagos. Why weren't there riots for these animal species that went extinct, and to try and save other endangered species?

Every year, 207,000 people in the United States become victims of sexual assault, while 97% of the attackers will never spend a day of their lives in jail. Why are there no riots to change this???

      Delete
    2. while i agree that there are far more important things that people could be rioting over i dont think that was really the point of that statement. if some one took something away from you that you really liked wouldnt you go and fight for it, no matter how small it is. you even said yourself,''You think the riots were bad when Twinkies were taken away? CHAOS WOULD LIKELY ENSUE if Oreos were to disappear.''

      Delete
    3. I think stating that ' Chaos would likely ensue if Oreos were to disappear' is a little too extreme. I mean, sure people like Oreos but do they love it enough to go to such extreme measures? To cause chaos and run around like mad crazies? I don't think so.

      Delete
    4. Hey, people did it for Twinkies. Why wouldn't they do it for Oreos?

      Delete
    5. I agree that not only would this decision have negative outcomes, but would make a mockery of the United States and it's citizens. Increased obesity rates would ensue along with depreciated general health.

  2. Eww no that.. no, do you know what is in a Twinkie? Twinkie, which was created during the Depression, contains thirty-nine ingredients. One of those ingredients is a preservative—sorbic acid. Sorbic acid is actually derived from natural gas.

If that isn’t gross enough for you, the other ingredients like cellulose gum, Polysorbate 60, and calcium sulfate, are also used in sheet rock, shampoo, and rocket fuel. No wonder Twinkies make kids run around like crazy and have even been used as a defense for murder. Also the vitamins, artificial colors, and flavorings in Twinkies come from petroleum.

So you wonder how this tasty treat made from gas and rocks can be so light and airy? Apparently, it’s limestone that makes Twinkies light. And that tasty cream center—it’s got to be milk, right? No. It’s made of shortening and beef fat; there is absolutely no cream in the cream.
All that being said no i don't think Twinkies should be America's national Junk Food. America's junk food should be something like Potato Chips, there are hundreds of flavors and ways they are made and shaped basically the only way to no like potato chips is to not like potatoes and in my entire life i have only met one person who has flat out not liked potaoes

    1. .....I take it you're the one who said that Twinkies were terrible?

And I have to say, EWWW! I never knew all those yucky things were in Twinkies!!! I'm glad I never really ate them that much after reading that!

      Delete
    2. People should be rioting about the ingredients put INTO the Twinkie. Be demanding a better product.

      Delete
    3. Yeah, but look at ingredients put into almost anything. You can easily nitpick anything. This argument doesn't outweigh the patritotic repercussions of twinkies...

      Delete
    4. Wow! Kai this is beautiful. Like the arguments you present blew me away. I could not believe the ingredients used in Twinkies. Why would America want to promote A junk "food" which has traces to natural gas. Disguting... just disgusting.

      Delete
    5. Come on people who cares what you eat. Don't bash on Twinkies while all fast food companies probably sell worse nutritional foods. Besides, If we were to look at George Washington and hated him because he had feces, acid, and fat in him would that be fair. Would he not be elected because of this? Twinkies are American and have rights like everyone else. Stop Discriminating Against Twinkies!

      Delete
    6. See! Another reason why Twinkies shouldn't be named America's National Junk Food. I just can't believe I ate limestone! And that pretentious milk, wow! what ever happened to the cream!! Although, the subject of this topic is about junk foods, it doesn't mean that American should name it's 'junkiest' junk food as the face of the 'junk food industry in America. That is just unbelievable.. I take back my comment of 'how delicious and desirable Twinkies are'

      Delete
    7. I agree with you that Twinkies are...EWW! Practically 3/4 of those 39 ingredients are ones that we have have never even heard about. So basically ,everytime you take a bite of a twinkie, you also think about teh traces of natural gases as well. That is absolutely disgusting.

      Delete
    8. You just cant compare the ingredients of junk foods, there is a reason why they are called JUNK food, they have a lot of junk in them. It is easily to get a kitkat and state every single preservative that it has and then say that it should be removed from the market. It is just not comparable.

      Delete
    9. Kai, these facts are very interesting, and very nauseating. And Bishoy, not voting for a presidential candidate because he has feces and blood and stuff is not a solid argument for one obvious reason: we will not be eating George Bush.

  3. I'm about to give you guys a sneak peak on Lord Gehm's commercial about Twinkies.
Twinkies are a national treasure and symbol. When people think of America they think of Freedom... and Twinkies. When Columbus sailed to America he urged his men to continue the tedious and deadly trip by promising them Twinkies. When Lewis and Clark set out on their journey, their mission was to find Twinkies. When Washington was in Valley Forge the only thing that kept his men there were Twinkies. You know why Nick lost WWII, his troops did not manufacture the delicious heaven that is Twinkies. You know why the government shut down? That is right, they don't have Twinkies. America was built through Twinkies, and if their were no Twinkies this country would be ruled by a dictator under a European flag. Twinkies have served this country since the day it was created, the LEAST we can do is make it a National Food.
I want you to take a look at the American Flag. If you realize the stars are white in our flag, which symbolizes the delicious creamy filling inside the golden sponge of the Twinkle. Now look at the Twinkies itself. It is a golden sponge, You know what else are golden? Winners are. The Twinkies resembles Freedom and Winners. Their should be a national holiday on the day the Twinkie was created.

Do you have any idea what hotdogs, mcnuggets, and all that tasy delicious Stuff YOU MOSTLY ALL ENJOY, are made of!? Besides look at the historical past. Kai mentioned their invention during the depression. THANKYOU!! They carried America out of its toughest times and supplied America with the patriotism that it always needed! 'Merica

    4. This is one of the best things I have ever read. Whenever I need a good laugh, Bishoy im going to look at this post.
On the more serious note, while you may be a die hard twinkies fanatic, you have to realize that not all in America share your love. Twinkies are dying out in our generation, not even I enjoy them, and you know I am a lover of all things food. We should leave this issue up to a vote to see where the majority truly lies!

      Delete
    5. This was such a genius post and i completly agree. Twinkies have been here for America through almost everything. They are the reason for many things, as bishoy proved with his hard hitting facts.

  4. To all of you communists out there arguing that twinkies aren't awesome, I say nay. But, in a probably not that surprising twist(as I usually do one), I do not think that Twinkies should be declared the national JUNK food. I think they should be declared the National FOOD. Like, out of all food. This is because realistically, what on earth beats a twinkie? A hamburger? No. A healthy salad? As if! Twinkies are the greatest invention made by man, and not since sliced bread, because they are better. According to statistics that I just made up and a study conducted by an organization that doesn't exist, humans WILL live happier lives if their diet consists mainly of twinkies. This is not because of their health benefits, which i assure you are EXTENSIVE, but because of something greater. Twinkies are the embodiements of patriotism. As they age old saying goes, A twinkie a day, keeps the Commies away. 'merica!

    2. Oreos are way more American than Twinkies are.

      Delete
    3. "A twinkie a day keeps the Commies away" . Exactly nick! We as Americans who preach democracy should have the CHOICE of making twinkies our national junk food!! In this case, twinkies are representing democracy. If they are taken away, our rights are being infringed upon! We might as well have a dictator who plans all of our meals!

  5. Twinkies… just the name disturbs me. There are so many reasons why this shouldn’t be the national Junk Food. Actually it fits all the criteria for “Junk” but not many for food. I wouldn’t consider natural gas, sheet rock and shampoo food and Twinkies have ingredients related with all. Twinkies are awful. They taste bad, look bad, and are made in a terrible fashion. Also, as the great and awesome Kai explained, the cream in the “delightful treat” isn’t really cream and is scamming people. So, if Twinkies become the national junk food they would exemplify that America is a hypocrite and not genuine.
If I would like a national junk food, it would without a doubt be Oreos. I don’t think America would be the same without them.

Even more so they have careied us in or toughest times as a nation! So go ahead get rid of twinkies and we will never get out of this national debt. Me, bishoy, and gehm will go to australia together were twinkies are welcome!

    2. Abu you are not a true American. Twinkies have done so much for this country that we can overlook what is in them, at the end we are all made up of atoms anyway.
Do you remember in Zombieland, the toughest most true 'Merican was Tallahassee. You know what his goal was? To find the last Twinkie. Even in the end of the world Twinkies are important.

    3. How is Abu un-American for not liking twinkies?? Twinkies are not associated with the United States. We are known for our juicy cheeseburgers, fries, etc. I think you are not a true American Bishoy because you enjoy Twinkies which aren't American at all... Murica to that!!!

Twinkies represent the rag to riches story; the story of the average American just trying to get by. To some, twinkies can comfort the morning commuter who just missed his bus. You're missing the point. Regardless of the authenticity of the cream, Twinkies can heal wounds.... Not everyones, but some.

I think it's sad how people almost lost their minds and rioted in the streets over Twinkies. Twinkies should not be banned or anything, because they are obviously loved for some reason, but they nor any other junk food deserves a national title/reputation.

  6. Ok, first of all if Congress actually did decide to place aside all of the Other IMPORTANT issues in the country to declare "A National Junk Food"... i will have all lost hope in federal government and plan on escaping to Australia. Why Austrialia... I can neither confirm nor deny.
But on a more important aspect rather than what our government does with its time is.. TWINKIES A NATIONAL JUNK FOOD?! WHAT! First of all This national food would have to be JUNK which twinkies are not! Junk come on seriously!? A twinkie is a spongey cake of deliciousness with 1 gram of protein!! Thats muscle babby!! Also , when twinkies were shutdown and production was stopped people Freaked! Riots of people in discontent blew up around the world! People were selling the last boxes of twinkies for over $100 on ebay! Showing twinkies mean freedom, love , and hope to some people! By the way has Anyone ever seen ZOMBIELAND?! That movie is based around the profound love of twinkies and the length people would go to obtain one! In the movie the character Tallahasse travels across the nation killing each and every zombie in sight and raiding super markets just for hope of finding a twinkie! Therefore i feel twinkies are synonomous to "American Dream"
Now if a food was named i think it should be fries!! Everybody eats fries and the are greasy fried and over salted bites of bad nutrition! I blame mcDonalds even though i love their fries!
It is absurb to suggest twinkies as a nation junk food! How dare you >:(

Ok, so along with the 1 gram of protein, are you are willing to deal with the absurd ingredients put into that tiny twinkie of yours. Such as eggs, milk ,butter orginally in additon to now bleached wheat flour, sugar cane, which is a large portion of a Twinkie. Also as well as, corn starch, glucose, fructose , high fructose corn syrup and god knows what other ingredients that people like us are unaware of. That my friend is not muscle, it is merly FAT!!!

  8. Twinkies, the golden cake! Oh! Twinkies! Anyhow, no matter how delicious and desirable Twinkies are, I think it is just absolutely ridiculous to call it America's National Junk Food. I believe Hershey's Milk Chocolate Bar should be the national junk food! The first Hershey bar was sold in 1900 which was far earlier than the establishment of Twinkies in the 1930s. This bar of deliciousness could be mixed with other ingredients! It's versatility is what makes it better than Twinkies. Can you make a Twinkies Shake? Twinkies Cheesecake? I don't think so! Also, due to the greatness of this creamy deliciousness of a chocolate, a family themed park in Pennsylvania was built! Thanks to Hershey and to this chocolate! Also, a national junk food should be liked by many and based on my investigation, not so many people like Twinkies. Thus, Hershey Milk Chocolate Bar should be the national junk food of America because... You can never go wrong with chocolates.

    3. EXCUSE ME MS. DE LEON.... Here are some GREAT TWINKIE RECIPES!!!

      Twinkie Sushi
And the winner for "Most fun you can have with Twinkies" goes to Twinkie Sushi. Wrap your Twinkie us with a Fruit Roll-Up, slice them into sections, and decorate with candy.

      Twinkiebabs
This one is more about presentation, but it's also a chance to pair your Twinkie with some other flavor options.
You can try mixing it up with something salty, or sour/sweet like pineapple.
Get nuts and put a little slice of jalapeno on there.

      Twinkie Cake
The Twinkie is already a cake, but that doesn't mean you can't use it to make a bigger cake.

      Twinkie French Toast
The challenge here is in keeping the whole thing together. Twinkies aren't particularly sturdy to begin with, so once you dredge them in egg they pretty much turn to mush.
Put a slotted spatula into the pan with the egg and placed the split Twinkie halves on top of it. It made it a lot easier to get them out of the egg in one piece, but it's still best to use caution when turning them.

      Twinkie Pudding Pie
Twinkies, vanilla pudding, pineapples, whipped cream, and sprinkles. You can even throw a cherry on there if you'd like.

      Twinkie Crepe
Twinkies, fresh strawberries, whipped cream, and chocolate syrup rolled up in a crepe.
Assembling this recipe is probably pretty simple, but crepes can be difficult to master, so if you've never made them before be prepared to ruin the first few.

      Twinkie Hotdog
It's a classic sweet and salty combination similar to, but not as tasty as fish fingers and custard.

Deep Fried Twinkies - yeah, that's just self-explanitory

SO THERE, MS. DE LEON... you CAN include Twinkies with many other foods and create some EXCITING RECIPES!!!

      LONG LIVE THE TWINKIE!!!!

Oh and Bishoy, guess what, if people have problems and if they're sad, twinkies can't solve their problem. Chocolate can. Also, to be national junk food, that junk food must be liked by many and represents the American people and the country. And Chocolate is that food. It's an all-american food and ingredient.

    7. But Mr Gehm! Twinkie sushi, twinkie hotdog and all are not that famous compared to recipes based on chocolate as the major ingredient. Chocolate cake is the classic dessert, and you can;t make twinkies into ice creams!!! Chocolate for the way!! And if America wants a national junk food it should be Chocolate, because you want your junk food to be liked by many and will forever be craved by people. And Twinkies just doesn't have that 'Oh-I-just-can't-wait-to-have-twinkies' appeal unlike, chocolates, they do emit that 'Get-in-my-stomach' vibe. We all have chocolate stocked in our pantries and fridge, but we don't always have twinkies.

  10. The Twinkie is an icon of junk food snacks and guilty pleasures, nutritionally worthless. And no, I do not think that Congress should make Twinkies a “National Junk Food”. That is just completely absurd. Our country is already has an obesity problem, and we don’t want to increase that by making Twinkies a “National Junk Food”. If you take a look at a Twinkie, it seems to be like a very simple snack. It's a spongy yellow cake that is 4 inches long with a creamy vanilla filling inside. But, it takes more than cake and filling to make a Twinkie. The original recipe, developed in 1930, included basic ingredients, like eggs, milk and butter. But, eventually longer shelf life expectancy was needed. Due to this, it led to the grand welcoming of more ingredients. Such as, bleached wheat flour and real sugar made from sugar cane and sugar beets comprise a large portion of a Twinkie. In fact, sugar isn't there just for the sweet taste, the sugar crystals held air and made the cake lighter. Also, helps give a Twinkie its color. Honestly, a huge number of Twinkie ingredients come from corn. Also, corn starch, glucose, fructose and high fructose corn syrup are important in the Twinkie-making process. Other ingredients are not ones we are aware of.” Twinkie are awful and disgusting, and god knows what unknown ingredients they are putting in that tiny piece of “delight”. If something should be made a “National Junk Food” , it should be Oreos!!! Oreos are the real deal!

  11. Okay guys were aren’t arguing whether twinkies taste good or not. And it’s obvious that they aren’t healthy, but then again that’s why they are considered “junk” food. While I personally do not like twinkies you can’t ignore that they are an American icon! They were invented in America and have been enjoyed for decades. People were rioting in the streets for crying out loud when Hostess was not reported to be not producing them any longer! People love their twinkies… and if a majority of Americans are crazy for twinkies, why not make it our national junk food? Its one of the few things that Americans originally created anyway. Doing this definitely wont bring on sudden rises in obesity, because people would not be required to buy the twinkies. This would not change anything in our country. Making twinkies the National Junk Food would be a funny little American inside joke, nothing more. SO REGARDLESS OF WHETHER YOU LIKE TWINKIES (I hate them) , if the majority of Americans are in favor of them they deserve a title!

    1. The obesity rate would go up. Think about it. Our government would basically endorsing this product. Of course people are going to buy even more Twinkies than they already do now.
And all those die-hard, proud-to-be-an-american, murica-loving patriots will buy them at an exponential rate, especially during national observances such as Veterans Day, 9/11, and of course 4th of July.

    2. So what if people buy them on holidays! Two or three twinkies never hurt anyone! Thats like saying eating apple pie on Christmas is health threatening. Twinkies wouldn't now be force fed down every persons throat. If you don't want to get fat, then just don't eat them... simple as that.

  12. I love twinkies. Personally, I can live off of them with a nice glass of milk. Twinkies have been around since forever, and because of this they DESERVE to be a national food. You can never go wrong with a delicious twinkie.
Twinkies deserve the respect to be called national food, not nation Junk food. They serve a much greater purpose then all those other ones. Its just wrong that they are not considered a national food yet. How can you hate twinkies? After all, they're not the unhealthiest food out there.

  13. I think it is absolutely embarrassing that our nation actually has a national "junk" food. Unhealthy eating has become such a huge part of who we are that we are nominating baked goods as characteristics? Yes, many people love twinkies, whether it be deep fried, frozen, or dipped in chocolate, but they do not reserve the right to be president of junk food. "National" things should be bird, flag, capital, etc. Sure, we have national doughnut day and even national bacon day, but they do not define the country. I thought the United States was trying to erase obesity and the whole image of unhealthy eating? And yes, twinkies are a big part of American culture, but we've been trying to terminate that area of our culture.
